The Zanzibar Gem — or ZZ Plant — is the plant for people who travel, forget, or simply lead busy lives. With its dark, waxy leaves and almost architectural shape, it looks expensive and high-maintenance. It is neither. It stores water in its thick rhizomes underground, meaning it can go weeks without attention and still look immaculate. I think of it as the most honest plant in the room — it asks for very little and gives a lot back.
Plant Care 🌱
Sunlight
Tolerates low light remarkably well, though it grows faster in bright indirect light. One of the few plants that genuinely suits a dimmer room.
Watering
Water sparingly — every 2–4 weeks depending on the season. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the only real way to harm it.
Pet-friendly?
No. Toxic to both cats and dogs. Wash your hands after handling as the sap can also mildly irritate skin.
tips
Don’t repot too often — the ZZ actually prefers being slightly snug in its pot. Growth is slow, so don’t panic if nothing seems to be happening. And avoid wiping the leaves with oily products; they’re naturally glossy and don’t need any help.
