The Monstera Deliciosa, nicknamed the “Swiss Cheese Plant” for its iconic split and hole-riddled leaves, is one of the most rewarding plants a beginner can start with. It’s forgiving, fast-growing, and dramatic enough to transform any corner of a room. The secret? Monsteras want to thrive β they just need you to stop overwatering them.
Plant Care π±
Sunlight
Bright, indirect light is ideal. It tolerates lower light but growth will slow. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which scorches the leaves.
Watering
Water when the top 2β3 cm of soil are dry. Every 1β2 weeks in warmer months, less in winter. When in doubt, wait another day.
Pet-friendly?
No. Toxic to cats and dogs if ingested.
tips
Wipe the leaves with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep them dust-free and photosynthesising well. Give it a moss pole to climb and you’ll be rewarded with much larger, more fenestrated leaves. And repot every 1β2 years β a rootbound Monstera will tell you by drinking water faster than you can give it.
